My First Attempt at Making Wheat Bread (2009)

After attending a bread making class presented by my friends Betty Jo and Jill, I decided that the time had come for me to LEARN how to use my stored wheat. So, with camera in hand, I documented my first attempt at making bread from SCRATCH! Click for Betty Jo’s recipes for Wheat Bread and Wheat Waffles (or Pancakes).

My friend, Jeni Payne, showed up right when I was making the bread and since she uses the same recipe, gave me a few tips along the way. These pictures show my OLD kitchen before I remodeled it. I had stopped making bread soon after but picked it up again in 2020. I’ve gotten a little better now 👍.

This is the first time I've ever owned wheat so I had to take a picture of me opening it.

Hard white wheat kernels before grinding them.

I purchased a WonderMill Grain Grinder for this task.

Freshly ground whole wheat flour.

I purchased a Bosch Mixer for making bread. It seems to work better for this task than my KitchenAid Mixer.

I did a pretty terrible job of shaping the dough into loaves…but carried on with the process.

The loaves in the glass pans rose beautifully. The ones in the metal pans, not so well. I can’t recall if I handled the last two loaves a little too much which could have been the reason for my failures.

Oops…These two loaves in the metal pans failed but still tasted good.

My husband was one of my testers. He approved!

Brooke loved the bread. She also wanted to show you her new Ed Hardy shoes…she doesn’t usually put her feet on the counter 😂
